Voice Over Recording

If you're thinking about getting into the voice over recording business, spend some time considering where your strengths lie. There are four main categories of voice over recording: commercials, narrations, imaging, or characterizations. While many professionals, like female voice talent Janet Ault, succeed in more than one category, even the full spectrum, when first starting out, it's best to focus on a single concentration.

Work on improving your skills by listening to professional voice over recording productions in an assortment of media - TV, radio, movie, etc. - on a daily basis, and learn to identify the characteristics of what makes a successful and effective performance. Research voice over recording techniques by reading books on the subject, and think about hiring the services of a voice coach, or taking a seminar or voice acting class.

When you begin receiving calls to audition for voice over recording jobs, be sure to observe basic standards of professional behavior. Know where you're going beforehand so you aren't late. Always conduct yourself in a friendly and businesslike manner. If you get the role, take direction graciously and attentively. Be sure to take good care of yourself, especially your voice; it is your instrument, your livelihood, and your calling card. If you have a cold, sore throat, or are experiencing some other impediment which may impact how you sound, notify the producer before the voice over recording session.

Pay attention to the producer and be aware of his cues, and be ready to do as many takes as needed, using different inflections, upon request. Remember, the producer is always right. And after you complete your voice over recording, don't linger and socialize. Exchange your contact information and leave. The producer still has work to do after you complete your part of the job and won't appreciate being held up. Like any other career, there are industry expectations that you must abide by in order to be considered a professional.

"Janet Ault is a true professional. I have had the great fortune to work with Janet for the past four years. Whether it's an on camera role that requires a highly polished corporate professional or a voice over narrative that's animated and hilarious, I have no doubt that Janet will execute. She's the kind of delightful talent who makes the producer/director look good every time."
