Many voice over actors start their careers by taking acting classes to develop nuances of vocal expression, personality, and timbre. It is essential that voice actors be able to recognize subtleties in tone and inflection in themselves, so they can tell whether their performance is appropriately dramatic or subtle, and if it's conveying the mood and emotion called for by the script.

Voice actors must be capable of taking direction, have a solid understanding of good studio and recording techniques, and be able to give a first-rate reading with little or no preparation. It is also critical for them to thoroughly understand the script - words, context, and meaning.
